Tips To Feel More Comfortable In Front of The Camera

Getting in front of the camera can be intimidating. Not many of us are professional models, who are used to having our photo taken. Below are some tips for how to feel more comfortable in front of the camera, so you can focus on enjoying your session.

Wardrobe

This might sound obvious, but wear something you feel good in. When you're comfortable in your outfit, it reflects in your confidence. Coordinate outfits with your family members, but avoid overly matching ensembles. Opt for colors that complement each other and consider the location of the photoshoot for appropriate attire.

Practice Posing

Spend some time practicing different poses in front of a mirror. This will help you understand your angles and find poses that make you feel confident. Relax your shoulders, stand tall, and don't be afraid to express your personality through your body language.

Natural Expressions

Authentic smiles and genuine emotions make for the best photographs. Instead of forcing a smile, think of something that genuinely makes you happy, like a funny family story or a happy memory. Engaging with your loved ones during the shoot can create natural expressions and beautiful, candid moments.

Location Familiarity

If possible, choose a location that holds special meaning for your family. Whether it's your home, a favorite park, or a beach where you often spend time together, a familiar environment can help you feel more at ease, leading to more relaxed and natural photographs.

Bring Props or Activities

Incorporating props or activities that your family enjoys can add a fun and personal touch to the photoshoot. It could be something as simple as a picnic, playing with a pet, or engaging in a favorite hobby. These activities can help you relax and focus on enjoying the moment.

Practice Deep Breathing

If you're feeling nervous, practice deep breathing exercises to calm your nerves before the shoot. Deep breaths can help you relax, clear your mind, and approach the photoshoot with a positive mindset.

Adding Magic To Your Photos in Post-processing

Taking your photos is only the first step when it comes to delivering a beautiful gallery to you. Much of the magic happens in the editing process. While you can’t make a bad photo into a good photo with editing, you can take an already good photo and transform it into something even more special.

Below I have outlined what my photo editing process looks like.

  • Maintaining accuracy: My goal is not to change the photo, only to enhance it. I like colours to remain true to life and I don’t make massive alterations in photoshop.

  • Colour Correction: This involves adjusting lighting, contrast to create a vibrant and lifelike image.

  • Cropping and Composition: Composition is key to photography. I always aim to compose the photos properly when taking the photo, but sometimes there are minor adjustments to make, like ensuring the photo is exactly level, or some cropping.

  • Removing Distractions: This is the only time I use photoshop in my images. Sometimes there are distractions in photos that we can’t get rid of at the time, but can easily do so later in photoshop - this could be rubbish on the ground, or a person walking past. By removing these distractions, we can keep the focus of the photo on you and your family.

  • Artistic Effects: I love black and white photos. Removing the colour from a photo often removes distractions and focuses instead on the emotion being captured.

  • Consistency Across Images: Sometimes this can be one of the most difficult parts of editing. When working with lighting conditions than are always changing, or different locations, we still want the photos to look consistent. A lot of time goes into ensuring a seamless look throughout your gallery.

Because of all the work that goes in to your photos after they’ve been taken, I advise that the delivery of your gallery will probably be a few weeks after your session.

5 Ways To Convince Your Partner That Family Photos Are a Good Idea

If you've decided that you want to get family photos taken, but your partner is feeling a little reluctant, look no further. I've compiled a list of reasons for you to use alongside your powers of persuasion.

1. Highlight the Emotional Value:

Remind your partner that these images are more than just pictures – they're windows into memories that can be shared for generations. Emphasise the joy of looking back on these photos years from now. By highlighting the sentimental value, you can help your partner understand the lasting impact your photos will have.

2. Connect with Personal Stories:

Share stories from your own childhood where looking at old family photos brought back fond memories. Mention how these photos can tell a story about your family's journey, documenting the growth of your children and the milestones you've achieved together.

3. Relate to Their Interests:

Find a way to connect family photos to your partner's interests. If they're into technology, explain how digital albums and online galleries make it easy to organise and share photos with family and friends. If they're nostalgic, talk about the significance of preserving memories for future generations. By aligning the concept of family photos with their passions, you can make it more appealing to them.

4. Discuss the Present and Future:

Bring up the idea that family photos capture your family's current dynamics and personalities. Point out that children grow up quickly, and these photos freeze moments that might otherwise be forgotten. Discuss how wonderful it would be for your children to have these memories to look back on when they're older. Remind your husband that family photos are not just about the present but also about creating a lasting legacy.

5. Present the Experience as a Fun Opportunity:

Convey the idea that a family photoshoot can be an enjoyable experience for everyone involved. Assure your partner that it won't be a stiff, formal affair, but rather a chance to bond, laugh, and create memories together. Suggest making it a fun outing – perhaps even combining the photoshoot with a family day, picnic, or visit to a favorite location. By framing the experience as a positive and enjoyable opportunity, you can alleviate any concerns he might have.

How to Prepare for a Family Photo Session

Getting in front of the camera can be a nerve-wracking experience. To help you feel confident ahead of time, here are some tips to get you prepared:

  1. Coordinate, Don't Match: Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical outfits. Instead, opt for coordinating colours and styles that reflect your family's personality. Mix and match patterns, textures, and accessories to create a vibrant and visually appealing ensemble. Remember, it's all about capturing your family's unique flair!

  2. Location, Location, Location: Choosing the right location sets the mood for your photos. Consider meaningful places like a favourite park, the beach, or even your own garden. The backdrop should complement your family's style and add a touch of magic to the final images.

  3. Timing is Everything: When scheduling your session, think about your family's routines and schedule accordingly. Avoid nap times or meal times when little ones might be tired or grumpy. Opt for a time of day when everyone is well-rested and in a great mood. And don't forget to factor in the golden hour—the magical time before sunset or after sunrise when the lighting is magical.

  4. Snacks and Toys: Pack a small bag of your family's favourite snacks and toys to keep everyone entertained during breaks. A happy and well-fed family makes for more relaxed and genuine smiles. Plus, it's an opportunity for a quick energy boost and a little reward for being fabulous models.

  5. Embrace the Candid Moments: While posed shots are lovely, the magic often happens in the candid moments when your family is being its authentic self. Encourage your loved ones to be playful, laugh, and interact naturally. These genuine moments capture the essence of your family and create the most heart-warming memories.

  6. Relax and Have Fun: Last but not least, remember to relax and have fun! A joyful and relaxed atmosphere sets the stage for beautiful smiles and genuine expressions. 1. Choose a Location: Choosing the right location is key to creating the perfect backdrop for your family photoshoot. Consider locations that hold a special meaning for your family, such as a local park, beach, or even your own garden. Make sure to consider the time of day you will be shooting as this can affect the lighting and overall look of the photos.

  2. Select Wardrobe Choices: The outfits you choose for your family can make or break your photoshoot. It’s important to coordinate your outfits while still showing off each individual’s personality. Choose a color palette that complements your chosen location and avoid bold patterns or graphics that may be distracting. Also, make sure to dress for the weather and bring along extra layers if necessary.

  3. Get to Know Your Photographer: Establishing a good relationship with your photographer is key to a successful photoshoot. Make sure to communicate your expectations and preferences with them beforehand, so they can tailor the photoshoot to your family’s needs. Additionally, ask your photographer about their experience working with families, their approach to photography, and their ideas for the shoot.

  4. Plan Ahead for Young Children: Keeping young children engaged and cooperative can be a challenge during a family photoshoot. Plan ahead and bring along toys, snacks, and anything else that can help keep them occupied and happy. Consider bringing along a family member or friend who can help keep children entertained while not being photographed.

  5. Be Flexible: Sometimes things don’t always go as planned, so it’s important to be flexible during the photoshoot. Be prepared for unexpected weather or other unforeseen circumstances that may require some flexibility in your schedule.

7 Reasons to Have Photos Taken in Your Home

Family photos are a great way to capture memories and celebrate your family's story. Here are some reasons why you should consider having family photos taken at your own home:

  1. It’s more personal - Your home is a reflection of your family's personality and style. Having photos taken in your own space allows you to personalise the images and create a unique look that is specific to your family.

  2. It’s more convenient - Taking family photos at home is incredibly convenient. You don't have to worry about traveling to a location or finding parking. You can also take breaks and have access to all of the amenities of your home.

  3. It can be more comfortable - Being in a familiar space can be comforting and calming for children, especially young ones who may be overwhelmed by a new location. You can also change outfits easily and take breaks as needed.

  4. Creativity - Your home provides a wealth of opportunities for creativity and unique photos. You can use different rooms, lighting, and props to create a variety of images that showcase your family's personality.

  5. Timeless memories - Your home is the place where your family spends most of their time, making it a natural backdrop for photos that will capture memories. When you look back at the images, you will be reminded of the love and warmth that your home brings.

How to Dress For Your Photography Session

It all begins with an idea.

Having your photos taken can be exciting. However, deciding what you and your family should wear can prove difficult. Below is a list of six ideas for how to dress:

  1. Wear neutral colours: Neutral colours such as white, black, cream, beige, grey, and are timeless and look great in photos. These colours won’t overpower or distract from the photo. Neutrals are easy to coordinate with each other, so you can mix and match outfits without having to worry about clashing colours.

  2. Avoid prints: Large prints, bold patterns, and wording on clothes can be distracting in a photo. Instead, opt for solid colours or subtle patterns like small stripes or polka dots. If someone in the family really wants to wear a print, make sure it's small and not too busy.

  3. Dress comfortably: You want to be comfortable during your session, so choose clothes that fit well and aren't too tight or too loose. Also, make sure your clothing allows you to move around and sit comfortably, especially if you have young children.

  4. Consider the weather: The location and time of day of your portrait session will influence what you wear. If you're taking photos outdoors in the winter, you'll want to dress warmly and layer up. If you're taking photos on the beach in the summer, you'll want to wear lightweight and breathable clothing.

  5. Accessorise wisely: Accessories can add interest and personality to your outfits, but they can also be distracting. Keep jewellery, hats, and scarves simple and understated. If you're wearing glasses, make sure they're clean and free of glare.

  6. Coordinate but don't match: You want your family to look cohesive in the portrait, but you don't want everyone to wear the exact same outfit. Instead, choose a colour scheme or style and have everyone choose their own outfits within those parameters. This will give your portrait a cohesive look without looking too matchy-matchy.

Remember to keep it simple, comfortable, and weather-appropriate. Choose neutral colours, avoid prints, and coordinate but don't match. And most importantly, have fun and enjoy the experience of capturing your family's memories.
